Formula Information

A small arrow pointing down

This topical powder formulation combines Clotrimazole 2%, Ibuprofen 2%, and Metronidazole 2% in a finely divided dry form intended for external application to the skin. Packaged with a dispensing mechanism for ease of use, it offers benefits such as moisture absorption, soothing properties, and reduction of friction. This makes it particularly suitable for various dermatological conditions and as part of skincare routines where maintaining dry skin surfaces is beneficial.

It works by inhibiting the growth of fungi, making it valuable in treating conditions like athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, and other superficial fungal infections. By incorporating clotrimazole, this powder helps manage and prevent fungal overgrowth, especially in moist and warm areas of the skin where fungi thrive.

Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) known for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. When applied topically, ibuprofen helps reduce inflammation, swelling, and pain associated with various skin conditions. Its inclusion in this formulation aids in soothing irritated skin, alleviating discomfort, and promoting healing in affected areas.

It is particularly useful in treating bacterial skin infections and inflammatory conditions like rosacea. Metronidazole works by inhibiting the growth of susceptible organisms, thereby reducing infection and associated inflammation. In this powder, metronidazole helps control bacterial proliferation on the skin, contributing to a healthier skin environment.

Drug Interactions

A small arrow pointing down

When considering the use of Clotrimazole 2%/Ibuprofen 2%/Metronidazole 2% Topical Powder, it is important to be aware of potential drug interactions, even though this formulation is applied topically. The risk of systemic drug interactions is generally lower with topical formulations compared to oral medications, but it is not entirely absent. This is particularly relevant for patients with compromised skin barriers, which may increase systemic absorption.

Clotrimazole is an antifungal agent that primarily acts locally on the skin. It is unlikely to interact with systemic medications due to its minimal absorption. However, patients using other topical antifungal agents should be cautious, as combining multiple antifungal treatments can lead to increased local irritation or allergic reactions.

Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that, when used topically, is absorbed in small amounts. Patients should be advised to avoid concurrent use of oral NSAIDs or other medications that can increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding or renal impairment, such as anticoagulants, corticosteroids, or other NSAIDs. Although the systemic absorption of topical ibuprofen is low, caution is advised in patients with a history of peptic ulcer disease or renal dysfunction.

Metronidazole is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent that, when applied topically, is absorbed in minimal amounts. However, patients should be informed about the potential for interactions with alcohol, as metronidazole can cause a disulfiram-like reaction. Although this reaction is more common with oral metronidazole, patients should be advised to avoid alcohol consumption during treatment and for at least 48 hours after discontinuation of the topical formulation.

Patients should also be aware of the potential for local skin reactions, such as redness, itching, or irritation, which may occur with the use of this topical powder. If such reactions occur, patients should discontinue use and consult their healthcare provider. Additionally, patients should inform their healthcare provider of all medications they are currently using, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, to assess for potential interactions.

For prescribers, it is crucial to evaluate the patient's complete medication profile and medical history to identify any potential interactions or contraindications. Special consideration should be given to patients with pre-existing conditions that may be exacerbated by NSAIDs or those with a history of hypersensitivity to any of the components in the formulation.

How Does it Work

A small arrow pointing down

The Clotrimazole 2%/Ibuprofen 2%/Metronidazole 2% Topical Powder is a specialized formulation designed to address a variety of dermatological conditions through a synergistic combination of active ingredients. This finely divided dry formulation is intended for external application to the skin and is often packaged in a container with a dispensing mechanism, making it convenient for targeted application. The powder form offers several benefits, including moisture absorption, soothing properties, and friction reduction, which are particularly advantageous for skin conditions that involve inflammation, infection, or irritation.

Clotrimazole, an antifungal agent, works by inhibiting the growth of fungi by disrupting the production of the fungal cell membrane. This action is crucial in treating and preventing fungal infections of the skin, such as athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm. By targeting the cell membrane, Clotrimazole effectively reduces the fungal load on the skin, alleviating symptoms such as itching, redness, and discomfort.

Ibuprofen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), is included in the formulation for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. When applied topically, Ibuprofen helps to reduce inflammation and pain associated with various skin conditions. Its mechanism involves the inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which play a key role in the inflammatory process. By reducing inflammation, Ibuprofen aids in the relief of symptoms such as swelling, redness, and pain, promoting faster healing and comfort for the patient.

In this formulation, Metronidazole works by disrupting the DNA synthesis of these microorganisms, leading to their death and the resolution of infection. This is particularly beneficial for skin conditions that are complicated by bacterial infections, such as rosacea or infected wounds. By controlling bacterial growth, Metronidazole helps to reduce inflammation and prevent further complications.

The combination of these three active ingredients in a topical powder form allows for a comprehensive approach to treating dermatological conditions. The powder's ability to absorb moisture is particularly beneficial in keeping the affected area dry, which is essential for preventing the growth of fungi and bacteria. Additionally, the soothing properties of the powder help to alleviate irritation and discomfort, while its friction-reducing capabilities protect sensitive skin areas from further damage.

This formulation is suitable for patients experiencing a range of skin issues, from fungal infections to inflammatory conditions complicated by bacterial involvement. It offers a multifaceted treatment approach, addressing the root causes of the condition while providing symptomatic relief. For prescribers, this formulation represents a versatile option for managing complex dermatological cases, particularly those requiring both antifungal and antibacterial interventions alongside anti-inflammatory support.

Compounded preparations have no NDC, so this formula will not appear in your EHR's drug search. Use your system's compound, non-formulary, or free-text prescription entry and name the preparation exactly as written in step 3. If your EHR forces you to pick a listed drug, pick the closest entry for the active ingredient and put the full formula in the prescription body (the Sig or directions field), not in Notes to Pharmacy.

Compounded preparations have no NDC and will not appear in your drug search. For EPCS to validate, select a drug entry your EHR recognizes as controlled, usually the bulk powder entry for the active ingredient (for example Ketamine (bulk) powder, not a branded product), then put the full formula from step 3 in the prescription body.
