Formula Information

A small arrow pointing down

Glycolic Acid 8% Topical Gel is a dermatological preparation designed to exfoliate the skin, promote cell turnover, and improve the skin's texture and appearance. Glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), serves as the active ingredient in this formulation. It works by breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, allowing for their easier removal, which can help to unclog pores, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and even out skin tone.

The semisolid gel formulation is specifically designed to be dispensed through a pump mechanism, which offers several advantages. The pump allows for hygienic and convenient dispensing, reducing the risk of contamination that can occur with jar packaging. It also provides a means for precise dosing, ensuring that patients apply a consistent amount of product with each use. The gel base is chosen for its ability to facilitate the absorption of glycolic acid into the skin while providing a non-greasy, easy-to-spread application.

Sun sensitivity may increase, and thus, the use of sunscreen is recommended. Patients should also be aware that results may vary and that consistent use as directed by a healthcare provider is necessary to achieve the best outcomes. For prescribers, it is crucial to consider the patient's skin type, any existing skin conditions, and their current skincare regimen when recommending this formulation. A gradual introduction into the patient's skincare routine may be advisable to minimize potential irritation.

Bayview Pharmacy's team of compounding pharmacists ensures that each batch of Glycolic Acid 8% Topical Gel is prepared with precision and in accordance with the highest quality standards. We are available to answer any questions and provide additional information to both patients and prescribers regarding the formulation, its use, and its potential benefits and side effects. If you have any questions or require further assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Drug Interactions

A small arrow pointing down

Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) commonly used in dermatology for its exfoliating properties. It works by breaking down the substance that holds dead skin cells on the surface, promoting exfoliation and stimulating new cell growth. This can help in the treatment of various skin conditions such as acne, photoaging, hyperpigmentation, and keratosis pilaris. While glycolic acid is generally considered safe for topical use, there are potential interactions that should be considered when using this 8% topical gel formulation.

Firstly, glycolic acid may increase skin sensitivity to the sun, leading to a higher risk of sunburn. Patients should be advised to apply sunscreen and limit sun exposure while using this product. Concurrent use with other products that cause photosensitivity, such as tetracyclines or thiazide diuretics, may further increase this risk. It is important to use sun protection and monitor for signs of sunburn.

Additionally, glycolic acid should be used with caution in combination with other topical skin treatments, especially those that can cause peeling, such as retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and salicylic acid. Using these products together may increase the likelihood of skin irritation, redness, and peeling. If irritation occurs, it may be necessary to adjust the frequency of application or discontinue use of one or more products.

Patients using topical corticosteroids should also be cautious, as glycolic acid may increase the absorption of the steroid, potentially leading to increased systemic effects. This is particularly important in patients using potent corticosteroids or treating large areas of the body.

When glycolic acid is used in conjunction with other exfoliating agents or procedures, such as microdermabrasion or chemical peels, there is a risk of excessive skin irritation or damage. It is advisable to space out these treatments to avoid potential adverse effects.

It is important to note that while glycolic acid is primarily for external use, caution should be exercised to ensure that the gel does not come into contact with the eyes, inside the nose, mouth, or other mucous membranes, as this may cause irritation.

Patients with sensitive skin or those with a history of allergic reactions to alpha hydroxy acids should use glycolic acid with caution. A patch test is recommended before widespread use to ensure no hypersensitivity to the product.

Lastly, while glycolic acid is not known to interact significantly with oral medications, it is always prudent to inform the healthcare provider of all the current medications and topical treatments being used to avoid potential interactions.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the use of glycolic acid 8% topical gel or its potential interactions with other drugs or products, please reach out to us at Bayview Pharmacy. Our team of compounding pharmacists is here to provide guidance and support to ensure appropriate treatment for your skin concerns.

How Does it Work

A small arrow pointing down

Glycolic Acid 8% Topical Gel is a dermatological formulation designed to exfoliate the skin, promote cell turnover, and improve the skin's texture and appearance. Glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), is the active ingredient in this formulation. It works by breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells on the outermost layer of the skin, allowing them to be sloughed away more easily. This reveals the newer, healthier skin beneath and stimulates the production of new skin cells.

It is particularly beneficial for treating conditions such as acne, as it helps to unclog pores and reduce the formation of acne lesions. Additionally, it can diminish the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation by accelerating the natural exfoliation process, leading to a more even skin tone and texture.

The gel base of this formulation is designed to enhance the delivery of glycolic acid to the skin. The semisolid consistency of the gel allows it to be easily spread over the treatment area without dripping or running, which can be especially useful for targeted application. Moreover, the gel formulation can be hydrating and may have a cooling effect on the skin, which can help soothe any potential irritation caused by the glycolic acid.

The pump mechanism of the container is specifically chosen for its ability to dispense a consistent amount of product with each use. This helps patients and prescribers to accurately dose the medication, ensuring that the correct amount of glycolic acid is applied to the skin. The pump also helps to protect the formulation from contamination and oxidation, which can occur when products are exposed to air and bacteria, potentially reducing their effectiveness.

For patients and prescribers interested in using Glycolic Acid 8% Topical Gel, it is important to note that while it is generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience mild side effects such as redness, peeling, or sensitivity to sunlight. It is recommended to use sunscreen and limit sun exposure while using this product. As with any topical treatment, it should be used as directed by a healthcare professional, and it is essential to follow any specific instructions provided with the prescription.

If you have any questions about Glycolic Acid 8% Topical Gel or would like more information on how it can be integrated into your skincare regimen, please reach out to us at Bayview Pharmacy. Our team of compounding pharmacists is here to provide guidance and support to ensure the safe and appropriate use of this formulation.

Other Uses

A small arrow pointing down

Glycolic acid, a prominent alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), is largely employed in dermatology for its exfoliating properties. Beyond its primary indication in treating hyperkeratotic skin conditions such as keratosis pilaris and acne, glycolic acid 8% topical gel may serve a variety of other dermatological applications. This semisolid formulation, easily dispensed from a pump for controlled application, can be utilized for its potential to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, contributing to its role in anti-aging regimens. Glycolic acid facilitates the shedding of dead skin cells, revealing a smoother, more radiant skin surface.

In addition to its exfoliative properties, glycolic acid can also be useful in minimizing the visibility of age spots, freckles, and hyperpigmentation by promoting an even skin tone through its skin-lightening effect. This effect is due to the inhibition of melanin formation, as it accelerates the turnover of the epidermis, thereby replacing pigmented skin cells with new cells. This gel, through its precise application mechanism, allows for targeted treatment of such pigmented areas.

Furthermore, the hydrating excipients in this gel can assist in improving the moisture content of the stratum corneum, leading to better hydrated skin. Because of its capacity to penetrate skin deeply and its role in skin cell renewal, glycolic acid may complement other treatments for more comprehensive skincare regimens, potentially enhancing the penetration of other topical agents. However, due caution must be exercised in combining glycolic acid with other products as this may lead to irritation or over-exfoliation, and thus it is always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional prior to initiating combined treatments.

Patients with certain skin conditions such as rosacea or eczema should approach the use of glycolic acid with caution, as their skin may be more sensitive to irritation. Providing patient education on the appropriate use of this product, including the application of sunscreen when using glycolic acid due to increased photosensitivity, is essential for maximizing benefits and minimizing potential adverse effects.

For prescribers considering glycolic acid 8% topical gel for off-label uses, it is important to consider individual patient skin type, the presence of any existing skin conditions, concurrent use of other skin care products, and patient's overall treatment goals. As with all off-label treatments, prescribers should closely monitor patient outcomes to ensure efficacy and safety.

If you have any questions or would like to explore potential uses of glycolic acid 8% topical gel further, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at Bayview Pharmacy. Our team of compounding pharmacists is ready to provide additional information and guidance tailored to your specific needs.
