Drug Interactions

A small arrow pointing down

This Phenylephrine HCl 0.5%/Pyrilamine Maleate 0.1% Nasal Solution is a specially compounded liquid formulation designed for nasal administration. It is primarily used for the treatment of Allergic Rhinitis, Sinusitis, Nasal Congestion, Rhinorrhea, and the Common Cold. The active ingredients in this solution work synergistically to alleviate these conditions. Phenylephrine HCl is a sympathomimetic amine that functions as a decongestant. It stimulates alpha-adrenergic receptors in the nasal mucosa, leading to vasoconstriction and a reduction in nasal congestion. Pyrilamine Maleate, on the other hand, is an antihistamine that blocks the action of histamine, a substance in the body that triggers allergic symptoms.

Together, these two medications provide comprehensive relief from the symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis, Sinusitis, Nasal Congestion, Rhinorrhea, and the Common Cold. However, it is crucial to note that this formulation should not be used for more than 3 consecutive days, as it may lead to rebound congestion. Additionally, this formulation may cause drowsiness, so it is advised not to use it while operating machinery or driving. Always consult with a healthcare professional if you have any questions or concerns about this medication.

How Does it Work

A small arrow pointing down

This compounded formulation is a nasal solution that contains Phenylephrine HCl 0.5% and Pyrilamine Maleate 0.1%. It is specifically designed to provide targeted treatment for a variety of nasal conditions. The solution is primarily used to treat Allergic Rhinitis, Sinusitis, Nasal Congestion, Rhinorrhea, and the Common Cold. It functions by reducing inflammation in the nasal passages, which in turn helps to alleviate swelling and congestion.

The Phenylephrine HCl in the solution acts as a decongestant, reducing the swelling of the blood vessels in the nasal passages. This allows for easier breathing through the nose. On the other hand, Pyrilamine Maleate is an antihistamine that works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. Together, these two active ingredients help to control and reduce the symptoms of nasal conditions, including sneezing, itching, and nasal congestion.

The solution is typically administered using a dropper or other appropriate nasal delivery device, as directed by a healthcare provider. While it is usually used as a single dose, it may be used multiple times a day if needed, depending on the severity of the symptoms and the advice of the healthcare provider. It is crucial to follow the instructions of your healthcare provider when using this medication to ensure its effectiveness and to avoid any potential side effects.

It is also important to note that while this nasal solution can provide relief from the symptoms of nasal conditions, it does not cure them. Therefore, it is recommended to seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen despite using the solution. If you have any questions about how this formulation works or about its usage, it is advised to consult with your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Compounded preparations have no NDC, so this formula will not appear in your EHR's drug search. Use your system's compound, non-formulary, or free-text prescription entry and name the preparation exactly as written in step 3. If your EHR forces you to pick a listed drug, pick the closest entry for the active ingredient and put the full formula in the prescription body (the Sig or directions field), not in Notes to Pharmacy.

Compounded preparations have no NDC and will not appear in your drug search. For EPCS to validate, select a drug entry your EHR recognizes as controlled, usually the bulk powder entry for the active ingredient (for example Ketamine (bulk) powder, not a branded product), then put the full formula from step 3 in the prescription body. A free-text entry that does not validate as controlled will be rejected by your EPCS module.
