How Does it Work

A small arrow pointing down

Sertraline 4 mg/0.1 ml Topical Gel is a specially compounded medication designed to provide targeted treatment for a range of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. This unique formulation is dispensed through a pump mechanism, ensuring easy and precise application on the skin.

The active ingredient in this topical gel is sertraline, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Sertraline works by increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain, a neurotransmitter that plays a crucial role in mood regulation. By enhancing serotonin levels, this medication helps to alleviate symptoms associated with these mental health conditions.

Upon application, the gel is absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream, providing a direct route for the medication to exert its effects. The gel is typically applied once daily, with noticeable effects usually occurring within a few days to a few weeks of consistent use.

It is crucial to note that this topical gel should not be used in conjunction with other SSRIs or monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) due to the risk of serious side effects. It is also important to discuss any other medications you are currently taking with your healthcare provider to avoid potential drug interactions. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new medication regimen.

While Sertraline 4 mg/0.1 ml Topical Gel offers a novel approach to managing mental health conditions, it is essential to remember that it is just one part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Regular consultation with your healthcare provider, along with lifestyle modifications and psychotherapy, can greatly enhance the effectiveness of this medication.

Compounded preparations have no NDC, so this formula will not appear in your EHR's drug search. Use your system's compound, non-formulary, or free-text prescription entry and name the preparation exactly as written in step 3. If your EHR forces you to pick a listed drug, pick the closest entry for the active ingredient and put the full formula in the prescription body (the Sig or directions field), not in Notes to Pharmacy.

Compounded preparations have no NDC and will not appear in your drug search. For EPCS to validate, select a drug entry your EHR recognizes as controlled, usually the bulk powder entry for the active ingredient (for example Ketamine (bulk) powder, not a branded product), then put the full formula from step 3 in the prescription body. A free-text entry that does not validate as controlled will be rejected by your EPCS module.
