Bayview in your state

Bayview Pharmacy and your state

Massachusetts patients come to Bayview when a prescriber writes for something a retail pharmacy does not stock: a strength that is not manufactured, a liquid instead of a capsule, a cream instead of a pill. We are a 503A compounding pharmacy in Warwick, Rhode Island, a short distance over the state line, and we have compounded sterile and non-sterile preparations since 2006 in USP 795, 797 and 800 labs.

Bayview Pharmacy is licensed as a nonresident pharmacy by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy. We fill and ship compounded prescriptions to patients anywhere in Massachusetts, including the Cape and the islands. Packages travel by UPS or USPS and typically arrive 1 to 2 business days after they leave the pharmacy. Packaging is plain, preparations that need temperature protection are packed for it, and expedited shipping is available for an additional charge.

Most Massachusetts patients have their prescriptions mailed. In the southeastern part of the state, driving over is often quicker: Fall River is roughly 30 minutes from our counter, New Bedford roughly 40 minutes, Worcester roughly 60 minutes and Boston roughly 75 minutes.

Getting a prescription to us is the prescriber's step. They can e-prescribe, fax the order to 401-284-4506 or use a Bayview order form. If you already take a compounded preparation from another pharmacy, call 401-284-4505 and we will ask for the transfer, or your prescriber can write it again. Once we have the prescription, a pharmacist verifies it, compounding is typically 1 to 3 business days, and then the preparation ships or waits at the counter. Compounded preparations are not FDA-approved and are made only on a prescriber's order.

Preparations commonly requested by Massachusetts prescribers include tadalafil, testosterone for women, estradiol vaginal cream, compounded thyroid, BLT numbing cream, hydroquinone blends, atropine eye drops and diclofenac gel.

The FAQ covers pricing, insurance and how prescriptions are handled. Existing patients can order a refill, and Massachusetts prescribers can set up an account and download order forms on the providers page.

Questions from patients and prescribers

Does Bayview Pharmacy ship to Massachusetts?

Yes. We ship compounded prescriptions to addresses across Massachusetts, from the Berkshires to the Cape and the islands. Packages go by UPS or USPS and typically arrive 1 to 2 business days after they leave the pharmacy. Preparations that need temperature protection are packed for it, and the outer packaging is plain. Expedited shipping is available for an additional charge if the prescriber wants the preparation started sooner than standard transit allows.

Is Bayview a licensed pharmacy in Massachusetts?

Yes. Bayview Pharmacy holds a nonresident pharmacy license from the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy, which allows us to fill prescriptions for Massachusetts patients and ship them from our Warwick, Rhode Island lab. We are a 503A compounding pharmacy: every preparation is made for one patient on one prescriber's order. Compounded preparations are not FDA-approved.

How long does shipping to Massachusetts take?

Transit is typically 1 to 2 business days by UPS or USPS once the package leaves Warwick. Before that, compounding is typically 1 to 3 business days after the prescription is verified, so plan on the two together when you are timing a refill. Expedited shipping is available for an additional charge. Southeastern Massachusetts patients sometimes skip shipping entirely and collect at the counter.

Can my Massachusetts doctor send a compounded prescription to Bayview?

Yes. Massachusetts prescribers can e-prescribe to Bayview Pharmacy in Warwick, Rhode Island, fax to 401-284-4506, or use one of our order forms. A pharmacist will call the office if a strength, base or dosage form needs confirming. If your prescriber has questions about what can be compounded and in what form, they can reach a pharmacist at 401-284-4505 or read the providers page.

Do you ship controlled substances to Massachusetts?

Yes. Bayview compounds Schedule II to IV preparations and ships them to Massachusetts patients when a licensed prescriber sends a valid prescription. Controlled substance prescriptions follow federal and state rules on transmission, refills and expiration, so your prescriber may have to send a new prescription instead of authorizing a refill. Call 401-284-4505 if you want to know what applies to a specific preparation.

Can I pick up my prescription in person?

Yes, and some Massachusetts patients do. Our counter is at 3844 Post Road in Warwick, Rhode Island, open Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 2pm. It is roughly 30 minutes from Fall River, roughly 40 minutes from New Bedford and roughly 75 minutes from Boston. Call 401-284-4505 first so we can confirm the preparation is finished before you drive.

Does Bayview take Massachusetts insurance?

Compounded preparations are usually paid out of pocket. Some plans reimburse the patient afterwards if you send in an itemized receipt, which we can print for you, and some flexible spending or health savings accounts can be used. We quote the price before compounding starts. Our guide on insurance and compounding pharmacies explains why coverage differs from a retail prescription.

Can I transfer my compounded prescription to Bayview?

Usually, yes. Call 401-284-4505 with your current pharmacy's name and the preparation, and we will request it. You can also request a transfer online and we will contact your current pharmacy for you. Having the prescriber resend the prescription is often faster and avoids any question about the formula. Refills on controlled substances follow state and federal rules, so those cannot always be moved and may need a new prescription from your Massachusetts prescriber.
