Estradiol is a naturally occurring estrogen (the main estrogen made by the ovaries) that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Estradiol is an estrogenic hormone used in hormone therapy and other applications. It is the principal intracellular human estrogen and is substantially more potent than its metabolites, estrone and estriol, at the receptor level.[2] It is the most potent and abundant estrogen during a woman's reproductive years and is crucial in regulating the menstrual cycle as well as the cardiovascular, neurologic, and skeletal systems.[1] Estradiol is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms and vulvar and vaginal atrophy associated with menopause.[2]
Other labeled uses include the treatment of hypoestrogenism due to hypogonadism, castration, or primary ovarian failure, the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis, and palliative treatment of certain metastatic breast cancers and advanced prostate cancer.[2]
Circulating estrogens are bound to sex hormone binding globulin and albumin, and their metabolic interconversions take place mainly in the liver.[2] Estradiol, estrone, and estriol are excreted in the urine along with glucuronide and sulfate conjugates.[2]
Prescribing estradiol requires careful consideration of patient-specific factors such as age, medical history, and concurrent medications. Estrogen therapy carries boxed warnings for endometrial cancer, cardiovascular disorders including stroke and blood clots, breast cancer, and probable dementia, and estrogens should be used at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest duration consistent with treatment goals.[1][2] Bayview Pharmacy compounds estradiol preparations on a prescriber's order.
