Formula Information

A small arrow pointing down

This formulation combines Amitriptyline HCl 2% and Ketoprofen 15% in a transdermal gel. It works by increasing the levels of certain chemicals in the brain that help improve mood, sleep, and the body's response to pain. On the other hand, Ketoprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.

The transdermal gel formulation allows for targeted application and absorption of these active ingredients. This is particularly beneficial for patients who may have difficulty swallowing pills or who prefer a non-invasive method of medication administration. The gel is dispensed through a pump mechanism, which allows for easy and precise application on the skin. This can be particularly beneficial for localized pain management, as the medication can be applied directly to the area of discomfort.

This formulation can be used to treat a variety of disease states. Amitriptyline HCl is often used for the management of neuropathic pain associated with conditions such as post-herpetic neuralgia and diabetic neuropathy. It may also be used for the management of chronic tension-type headache, prophylaxis of chronic daily headache, fibromyalgia, and other chronic pain syndromes. Ketoprofen, on the other hand, is commonly used for the relief of signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, mild to moderate pain, and the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea.

As with any medication, it is important to use this formulation as directed by your healthcare provider. Side effects may include skin irritation at the application site, drowsiness, dizziness, and dry mouth. If these side effects persist or worsen, or if you experience any serious side effects such as chest pain, rapid or irregular heartbeat, or changes in mood or behavior, seek medical attention immediately.

It is also important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are currently taking, as Amitriptyline HCl and Ketoprofen may interact with other drugs. Also, inform your healthcare provider if you have any allergies, medical conditions, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

If you have any questions about this formulation, do not hesitate to reach out to us at Bayview Pharmacy. Our team of knowledgeable compounding pharmacists is here to assist you.

Drug Interactions

A small arrow pointing down

Amitriptyline HCl 2%/Ketoprofen 15% Transdermal Gel is a unique formulation designed to deliver targeted relief for various conditions.

However, like all medications, this formulation can interact with other drugs, potentially altering their effects or increasing the risk of adverse reactions. It's crucial for patients and prescribers to be aware of these potential interactions.

Firstly, Amitriptyline HCl can interact with other antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and other tricyclic antidepressants. Combining these medications can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition. It can also interact with anticholinergic drugs, leading to increased side effects such as dry mouth, constipation, and urinary retention.

Secondly, Ketoprofen can interact with other NSAIDs, increasing the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding and ulcers. It can also interact with blood thinners, such as warfarin, increasing the risk of bleeding. Additionally, Ketoprofen can reduce the effectiveness of certain blood pressure medications and may increase the risk of kidney damage when taken with certain other medications, such as ACE inhibitors or diuretics.

Furthermore, both Amitriptyline HCl and Ketoprofen can interact with alcohol, potentially increasing the risk of drowsiness and other side effects. Therefore, it's recommended to avoid or limit alcohol consumption while using this formulation.

It's important to note that this is not a complete list of potential drug interactions. Patients should inform their healthcare provider of all medications they are currently taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Similarly, prescribers should thoroughly review the patient's medication history before prescribing this formulation.

This formulation is intended for topical use only and should not be ingested or applied to broken skin or open wounds. Patients should follow the prescribed dosage and application instructions to ensure the safe and appropriate use of this medication.

If you have any questions or concerns about this formulation or its potential interactions with other medications, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. Our team of compounding pharmacists at Bayview Pharmacy is always here to help.

How Does it Work

A small arrow pointing down

The Amitriptyline HCl 2%/Ketoprofen 15% Transdermal Gel is a unique formulation that combines two active ingredients, Amitriptyline HCl and Ketoprofen, in a gel base for transdermal application. This formulation is designed to be applied directly to the skin, where it is absorbed into the body to provide targeted treatment.

Amitriptyline HCl is a tricyclic antidepressant that is used in this formulation for its analgesic properties. It works by increasing the levels of certain chemicals in the brain that help elevate mood and reduce the sensation of pain. When applied topically, Amitriptyline HCl can help to numb the skin and underlying tissues, providing relief from localized pain.

Ketoprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body. When applied topically, Ketoprofen can provide targeted relief from pain and inflammation in specific areas of the body.

The combination of these two active ingredients in a transdermal gel formulation allows for targeted treatment of pain and inflammation. The gel base facilitates easy and precise application, and the pump mechanism ensures that the correct dose is dispensed each time. This formulation is particularly useful for patients who have difficulty swallowing pills or who require targeted pain relief.

This formulation can be used to treat a variety of disease states that involve pain and inflammation. These may include conditions such as arthritis, nerve pain, muscle pain, and other types of chronic pain. The combination of Amitriptyline HCl and Ketoprofen provides both immediate and long-term relief from pain and inflammation.

As with any medication, it is important to use this formulation as directed by your healthcare provider. If you have any questions about this formulation or how to use it, please reach out to us at Bayview Pharmacy. Our team of knowledgeable compounding pharmacists is here to help.

Other Uses

A small arrow pointing down

Amitriptyline HCl 2%/Ketoprofen 15% Transdermal Gel is a medication that directly treats specific areas experiencing pain, inflammation, and nerve-related discomfort by offering targeted application and absorption through the skin. Beyond the management of these symptoms, this formulation has potential utility for other clinical uses that are less common but nonetheless significant.

Patients dealing with persistent muscle and joint pain, for example in conditions like fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis, can potentially benefit from this formulation. The Amitriptyline component, a tricyclic antidepressant, can aid in lessening chronic pain while Ketoprofen is one of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) known for anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. This dual-action nature allows for comprehensive pain management and symptomatic relief.

It's also worth knowing that Amitriptyline has a wider spectrum of use. In lower doses, it can help manage symptoms of some types of neurological disorders. It may be used off-label, for example, to treat migraines, post-herpetic neuralgia (a complication of shingles), or peripheral neuropathy (a common complication of diabetes).

In the context of skin-related conditions, this transdermal gel could potentially provide localized relief in instances of skin inflammation associated with certain dermatological conditions.

Remember, using this formulation for off-label purposes does not guarantee outcomes and should only be considered under the guidance of a medical professional. The drug interaction profile, potential side effects, and contraindications must all be factored in; healthcare providers can provide insights and directions on these matters.
