Ketoprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Ketoprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used in compounded formulations for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been shown to inhibit prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis, and it also has antibradykinin and lysosomal membrane-stabilizing activity.[1] Oral ketoprofen capsules are FDA approved for the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, and the immediate-release capsules also for pain and primary dysmenorrhea.[1]
In compounding pharmacy settings, ketoprofen can be prepared in dosage forms such as topical preparations on a prescriber's order. Compounded topical ketoprofen preparations are not FDA approved.
Ketoprofen immediate-release capsules are rapidly and well absorbed, with peak plasma levels within 0.5 to 2 hours.[1] Prescribers should be mindful of the boxed warnings shared by NSAIDs: an increased risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, heart attack, and stroke, and an increased risk of serious gastrointestinal bleeding, ulceration, and perforation, any of which can be fatal.[1]
