How Does it Work

A small arrow pointing down

This topical gel is a compounded formulation that combines five active ingredients: Ketamine Hydrochloride 5%, Phenytoin 5%, Mexiletine Hydrochloride 2%, Clonidine Hydrochloride 0.2%, and Menthol 0.025%. Each ingredient plays a crucial role in managing various conditions such as chronic pain, neuropathic pain, and muscle spasms.

Ketamine Hydrochloride is an anesthetic that functions by blocking nerve signals in the brain and spinal cord, thereby reducing pain and muscle spasms. Phenytoin, an anticonvulsant, works by decreasing the activity of certain nerve cells in the brain.

Mexiletine Hydrochloride is an antiarrhythmic medication that operates by blocking sodium channels in the heart, making it useful in treating irregular heartbeats. Clonidine Hydrochloride, on the other hand, decreases the activity of certain nerve cells in the brain and is used to manage high blood pressure and anxiety.

Menthol serves as a topical analgesic, providing a cooling sensation by cooling the skin, which helps reduce pain and inflammation. The gel-like consistency of this formulation allows for easy and precise application on the skin, ensuring that the active ingredients are delivered directly to the affected area for targeted treatment.

This approach allows for a more localized treatment of the condition, enhancing the effectiveness of the medication. If you have any questions about this formulation or its mechanism of action, please do not hesitate to reach out for further clarification.

Compounded preparations have no NDC, so this formula will not appear in your EHR's drug search. Use your system's compound, non-formulary, or free-text prescription entry and name the preparation exactly as written in step 3. If your EHR forces you to pick a listed drug, pick the closest entry for the active ingredient and put the full formula in the prescription body (the Sig or directions field), not in Notes to Pharmacy.

Compounded preparations have no NDC and will not appear in your drug search. For EPCS to validate, select a drug entry your EHR recognizes as controlled, usually the bulk powder entry for the active ingredient (for example Ketamine (bulk) powder, not a branded product), then put the full formula from step 3 in the prescription body.
