Formula Information

A small arrow pointing down

Simvastatin 2%/Cholesterol 2% Topical Gel is a specially compounded medication designed to manage and treat a range of lipid-related conditions such as hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis, hypercholesterolemia, dyslipidemia, and hypertriglyceridemia. This unique formulation is a semisolid gel that is dispensed through a pump mechanism, allowing for easy and precise application on the skin.

The active ingredients, simvastatin and cholesterol, are absorbed directly into the bloodstream through the skin, targeting the treatment area effectively. Simvastatin works by reducing the levels of LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and other harmful lipids in the blood, while cholesterol aids in maintaining the balance of lipids. This combination not only helps manage lipid levels but also reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, contributing to improved overall health.

This topical gel formulation provides an alternative treatment option for patients with lipid-related diseases, especially those who may have difficulty with oral medications. However, it is crucial to use this medication under the guidance of a healthcare provider due to potential side effects such as skin irritation, redness, and itching. Regular monitoring of cholesterol levels is also necessary while using this medication to ensure its effectiveness and safety.

If you have any queries about Simvastatin 2%/Cholesterol 2% Topical Gel or wish to understand more about its role in treating lipid-related diseases, please feel free to contact us at Bayview Pharmacy. Our team of compounding pharmacists is equipped with the knowledge and expertise to assist you.

Drug Interactions

A small arrow pointing down

Simvastatin 2%/Cholesterol 2% Topical Gel is a specialized compounded formulation designed for the treatment of various lipid disorders such as hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis, hypercholesterolemia, dyslipidemia, and hypertriglyceridemia. This unique formulation combines the cholesterol-lowering properties of Simvastatin, a 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitor, with cholesterol. Simvastatin works by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for cholesterol production in the body, thereby helping to reduce the levels of cholesterol in the blood.

Cholesterol, on the other hand, is a vital lipid necessary for the formation of cell membranes and is a precursor for the synthesis of steroid hormones. The combination of these two active ingredients in a topical gel formulation aids in the reduction of blood cholesterol levels, thereby decreasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Furthermore, this topical gel formulation assists in reducing the risk of atherosclerosis, a condition characterized by the buildup of fatty deposits in the arterial walls. This buildup leads to arterial narrowing, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. The topical gel also aids in lowering the levels of triglycerides in the blood, which can help mitigate the risk of developing dyslipidemia, a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of lipids in the blood.

It is crucial to understand that this topical gel is not a replacement for other cholesterol-lowering medications, such as statins. It is also essential to adhere to the instructions provided by your healthcare provider when using this medication. If you have any queries regarding the use of Simvastatin 2%/Cholesterol 2% Topical Gel, it is recommended to consult with your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

How Does it Work

A small arrow pointing down

Simvastatin 2%/Cholesterol 2% Topical Gel is a specially compounded medication designed to manage and treat a range of lipid-related conditions. These include hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis, hypercholesterolemia, dyslipidemia, and hypertriglyceridemia. This unique formulation is applied directly to the skin, where it is absorbed into the bloodstream to effectively reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the body.

The gel contains two active ingredients: Simvastatin and Cholesterol. Simvastatin is a statin medication that inhibits the enzyme responsible for cholesterol production in the liver. Cholesterol, on the other hand, is a lipid-lowering agent that aids in reducing the body's cholesterol levels. The combined action of these two ingredients helps to decrease cholesterol and triglyceride levels, thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and other lipid-related conditions.

When using Simvastatin 2%/Cholesterol 2% Topical Gel, it is crucial to adhere to the instructions provided by your healthcare provider. The gel should be applied to clean, dry skin, preferably twice daily. Avoid contact with the eyes, nose, and mouth, and ensure to wash your hands thoroughly after application. It is also recommended to avoid sun exposure while using this medication, as it may increase the risk of skin irritation.

If you have any questions or concerns about using this medication, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider.

Compounded preparations have no NDC, so this formula will not appear in your EHR's drug search. Use your system's compound, non-formulary, or free-text prescription entry and name the preparation exactly as written in step 3. If your EHR forces you to pick a listed drug, pick the closest entry for the active ingredient and put the full formula in the prescription body (the Sig or directions field), not in Notes to Pharmacy.

Compounded preparations have no NDC and will not appear in your drug search. For EPCS to validate, select a drug entry your EHR recognizes as controlled, usually the bulk powder entry for the active ingredient (for example Ketamine (bulk) powder, not a branded product), then put the full formula from step 3 in the prescription body. A free-text entry that does not validate as controlled will be rejected by your EPCS module.
