"Fortified" means the eye drop is compounded at a much higher concentration than the standard commercial gentamicin drop, which is 0.3% (3 mg/mL). Bayview compounds it at 15 mg/mL, about five times the commercial strength, because a serious eye infection can need more antibiotic delivered to the surface of the eye.
It is used to treat serious bacterial eye infections, most often bacterial keratitis (a corneal infection or ulcer), especially when gram-negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas are involved or suspected. An eye specialist prescribes and monitors it, often based on cultures of the infection.
