Sodium Bicarbonate is an alkalinizing salt (baking soda) that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Sodium bicarbonate is used in pharmaceutical preparations for its buffering and alkalinizing properties. As a systemic alkalizer, it is used to manage metabolic acidosis: intravenous sodium bicarbonate increases plasma bicarbonate, which buffers excess hydrogen ions and raises serum pH.[1]
Oral sodium bicarbonate is approved to relieve heartburn, acid indigestion, and upset stomach.[1]
Sodium bicarbonate is also used orally in renal tubular acidosis, for urinary alkalinization, and in certain drug toxicities, such as salicylate overdose.[1] Adverse effects can include metabolic alkalosis, and extravasation of intravenous sodium bicarbonate can cause chemical cellulitis and tissue necrosis.[1] Bayview compounds preparations containing sodium bicarbonate on a prescriber's order.
