Ivermectin is an antiparasitic medicine that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Ivermectin is an antiparasitic agent of the avermectin family of macrocyclic lactones.[1] It works by binding selectively and with high affinity to glutamate-gated chloride ion channels in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells, increasing the permeability of the cell membrane to chloride ions and resulting in paralysis and death of the parasite.[2] Oral ivermectin is FDA approved for strongyloidiasis of the intestinal tract and for onchocerciasis, both caused by nematode (roundworm) parasites.[2]
A 1% ivermectin cream is FDA approved for the inflammatory lesions of rosacea; its mechanism of action in rosacea is unknown.[1] In clinical trials of oral ivermectin for strongyloidiasis, reported side effects included dizziness and itching (each 2.8%) and diarrhea and nausea (each 1.8%).[2] With the 1% cream, skin burning sensation and skin irritation were each reported in 1% or fewer of patients.[1]
