Ascorbic Acid, commonly known as Vitamin C, is an essential nutrient. It is a water-soluble vitamin and an important physiological antioxidant that can limit the damaging effects of free radicals.[1]
Vitamin C is required for the biosynthesis of collagen, an essential component of connective tissue that plays a vital role in wound healing.[1] It also improves the absorption of nonheme iron, the form of iron present in plant-based foods.[1] In topical skin products, vitamin C has been reported to stimulate collagen synthesis and to reduce hyperpigmentation by inhibiting melanin synthesis.[2]
Vitamin C is also required for the biosynthesis of L-carnitine and certain neurotransmitters.[1] Researchers are studying whether it might help prevent or delay diseases in which oxidative stress plays a role, such as certain cancers and cardiovascular disease.[1]
