Sulfacetamide Sodium is a sulfonamide antibiotic that Bayview compounds to a prescriber's order.
Sulfacetamide sodium is a sulfonamide antibacterial used in topical and ophthalmic products. It is bacteriostatic and acts as a competitive inhibitor of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) utilization, blocking bacterial synthesis of dihydrofolic acid.[1][2] In ophthalmic labeling it is active against susceptible organisms including Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella species, and Enterobacter species, but topically applied sulfonamides do not provide adequate coverage against Neisseria species, Serratia marcescens, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.[2]
In dermatology, FDA-approved sulfacetamide sodium 10% lotion is indicated for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris.[1] Sulfacetamide sodium 10% ophthalmic solution is indicated for conjunctivitis and other superficial ocular infections due to susceptible microorganisms, and as an adjunct to systemic sulfonamide therapy for trachoma.[2]
In a percutaneous absorption study using human cadaver skin, about 4% of topically applied sulfacetamide was absorbed.[1] It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to sulfonamides, and severe reactions including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, and blood dyscrasias have been reported with sulfonamides.[1]
